From the Windsor Star – November 15, 1961. An article about the impending demolition of some buildings as part of the urban renewal plan.

12 BUILDINGS TO BE WRECKED

Downtown Landmarks Included

Site of Court One of Areas To Be Cleared

The city is calling for tenders for one of its largest wrecking orders. Most of the structures to be torn down are involved in re-development areas. Among other things the wrecking hammers will clear the site for the new county courthouse to be erected on the block east of City Hall Square. Only structure to be wrecked outside the downtown area redevelopment programs is the Westcott Rd. Community Centre which has been replaced by the new A.K.O. building.

Nov. 22 is the closing date for tenders. All 12 buildings slated for demolition, the largest wrecking order since the clearing of the redevelopment area east of City Hall where the new apartments have been erected, are to be included in one contract. The 11 structures involved in the redevelopment areas include besides housing the Walker House and B.M.E. Church. both on the courthouse site, and the Homestead on Wyandotte St. E The elderly residents of the Homestead have been moved to the new Huron Lodge home for the aged.

Houses on Glengarry Ave., Wyandotte St. E.. University Ave. E. and Mercer St. are among the properties which gradually have been bought by the city in its purchase of properties for redevelopment.

They were rented to their former occupants. Tenants already have been moved out of the houses to be wrecked, in some cases to the new redevelopment apartments. The houses to be demolished are considered to be in dilapidated condition and when other accommodation was found for the tenants the decision was made to clear out the buildings.
