Wow. I had no idea the Coach has been around that long!
What I wouldn’t give to see that building with all the paint stripped off of it, flags in every holder, and all the upper windows opened up!

That’s amazing. I knew the Coach had been around for a long time, but from what I gathered it had been a shit hole like it is now for a very long time. I have seen tons of bands there and played there many times in the 90’s/2000’s, and even though it’s beat up and has seen better days, when you go down there you can tell it was once a very attractive looking place. I haven’t been there in a while, but there is a grandfather clock in there that has been there for AGES, that my last band used as the basis of our album cover, very cool stuff. I would LOVE to see a few inside photos of the place from this same era.

Is it still open ? I see a flyer on each door but tried to zoom in & it’s to blurry. I imagine it is like most other businesses downtown and is closed. Thanks !!!
it is very much still open and it and the other 3 bars in that building are the best ones in town! Downtown’s got a lot to offer!
The Coach is still open and is home ground for many of Windsors local bands. It may be in a bit of rough shape but you can sense the history and its still my favorite place to play.
What was this building before it was the Coach and Horses? It looks rather old. Was it a buisiness of some sort?
the bigger bar that the coach is located in was once Baum &brodies furniture store
the building that the coach and the other bar on the main floor was Baum &Brodies furniture store back in the 50″s
I believe that it was originally a furniture store, though I am not 100% certain.

A very interesting history.
It looks like in the original picture that part of the brick was painted a dark colour as well. Maybe back in ’79 it looked better than today’s hideously faded blue/purple and faded red/pink combination. Inside the Coach and Horses, it has the potential to be an amazing restaurnt/bar/entertainment facility, something similar to the restaurant/hall area of the Old Mill Inn & Spa in Toronto. A bar like this could be restored and fit perfectly in Olde Walkerville.
Anyone remember when that huge metal fish used to hang on the corner of the building?
I love going to the Loop, but the air inside always tastes like people on a good night lol.
The original tin ceiling is still up there, AND they finally installed a sprinkler system!!!
I’ve frequented this place many times since I was of age.
It’s always been a great place to go and have fun, but the state it is in is terrible.
Inside historic reminders are everywhere, but how the building is not condemned escapes me.
This plot of land was originally a fish market (late 1800s), hence its old name, and the fish that used to hang.
The fish that used to hang was from the old fish market restaurant from the 80’s, not it being a fish market from the 1800’s.
The place is a dump and full of mould. YOu can smell it as soon as you go into the building.
The owner is just another speculator that hasn’t done anything with the building since he purchased it (you know who you are).
It would make a great incubator for a multiple retail store. But alas, this will eventually come down like everything else in downtown.

Wow. Feels like you could step into the Rovers Return through an entrance like that. The world needs more proper pubs. I just remember going there (and to the other two bars) and getting plastered. 16-17 years later, and I am only beginning to stomach live bagpiping again. Jack Daniels, not so much.
@ Ken, the site WAS an old fish market in the late 1800s, and yes there was a place to eat named the same later in the 1980s.

I’ve gobe back to the Wibdsor Herald, found nothing in
1855 but a new meat/fish market at Pitt/Goyeau.
The closest things I vould find were the following:
1855 – Upper Ferry House ……. Sold booze and oysters lol
1916 – Allen Fish Market. 41 Pitt east
1914 – Windsor Fish Market @ 16 Sandwich west & cor Wyandotte/Goyeau
Both addresses had the phone number 516
1915 – Ideal Fish Co. 81 Langlois, two blocks south of Wyandotte east.
These people claim to be the oldest fish market in Windsor.

It was in a news paper article. I believe 1890s if I remember correctly.
And it wasn’t a building. It was open air market.

Back in the 80?s I worked here and the place was alright. About the supposed ghosts: I remember cleaning up one night upstairs and I could hear walking and glasses being moved downstairs. I went downstairs and realised I was the only one in there. Not being one for ghost stories I continued cleaning. Upstairs I heard a similar walking sound not too long after but I didn’t bother to investigate. Coworkers used to comment on hearing strange things as well.
The flag posts are still there, why aren’t there flags in it? That one of the biggest things I’ve noticed in all of the old pictures, compared to today. The old building just looked classier with flags. They are a rare sight now, and it shouldn’t be that way.

Wow, things have changed. Me and my buddies would come from across the river to drink and throw darts in the mid 80’s. Had many good nights down in that basement.
