Downtown – 1905

So, 102 years ago, this is how Riverside Drive looked. The saddest thing about the photo above is that over the last century we have managed to demolished every last building visible.

To get a similar view today, you would be standing in the middle of Riverside Dr. In front of the Cleary er… St. Clair Centre for the Arts… looking east.

All the buildings on the left of the photo are where Dieppe Park is today located. The block on the right hand side is the old Norwich block.

The really tall building a few blocks east that is located in about the middle of the photo was our Opera House. I’m not sure how long it served in that capacity, it was also known as the Davis Block. In later years, it served as a department store. It was demolished sometime in the 1970’s, and today the site is occupied by the Travelodge Hotel.
