While doing some research over the last little while, I found reference to a new, previously unknown (to me at least) architect in Windsor from the late 1920’s named Charles L Archibald. He appears to have been located in Walkerville, and was the architect for several projects for Marsden, Fawcett & Cameron, builders & contractors in the 1927-1928 period. A few of their projects were to build buildings to house Loblaws Grocery Stores. One of the buildings remains standing today as Motor Burger on Erie St near Parent, and another one is on the south east corner of Tecumseh & Gladstone. This block with stores on the lower level and apartments above (built 1928), remains in pretty decent shape.
The photo above shows the building as it looked in 1950. The lower level has been reclad, but all in all it’s architecturally in very good condition. As you can see on the left side of the building, Loblaws was still in place 22 years after construction.
I was not aware that this was a Loblaws at one time. Was the building immediately to the East not a grocery store before it became Franco’s?
