Add Christ the King at the corner of Dominion & Grand Marais to the list of vacant Catholic Churches. This place was built in a very traditional style in 1954.
It’s really a shame that the RC Church doesn’t realize that its greatest assets are its historic buildings. The mid 1950’s really marked an end of traditional church architectural design. The modern style influenced the next decade before non-traditional boxy styles took over through the 1970’s.
Hopefully a use is found for the building, without requiring demolition.
If history is any guide, that church will become a hideous strip mall very soon. The people of Windsor are too stupid and lazy to hold on to anything as beautiful as that church.

Is there a strip mall where the former St. Clare Church is? Is there a strip mall where the former Immaculate Conception is? Both are being re-used as places of worship. If history is any guide, this church will hopefully be purchased and see another fifty years as a place of worship – maybe not by Roman Catholics, but that doesn’t really matter.

Even if it wasn’t used for a church maybe it could be converted to apartments. It’s a beautiful building and looks very solid – I think converted churches make very appealing living spaces – and I don’t think I’m alone in this belief.

Yeah there are a few out in the county like that. Smaller churches but still very cool living quarters, I’m sure. Ditto for old schoolhouses.
Why is it that the people you really admire and respect these older buildings are not the people with power to do something about it and why is it the people in power don’t respect older buildings?
What a crying shame that a wonderful building that lives in thousands of memories of adults who were raised in the area, is just being taken out for a “convenience store, to sell people junk food at elevated prices with a self serve gas bar in tow.
When they tore down my grade school and church (in another city) I felt I was robbed of my childhood.

Does anyone have interior pictures of Christ the King Church?
Christ the King church is older than 1954. I think that the headstone that you have photographed was only for a modification or small addition that was done in 1954. I started school at Notre dame de Bon Secours separate school (pronounced Noter dame back then) located just beside Christ the King Church. When I started grade 1 in 1955 we had half day classes because of the overload of kids. I was transfered to the newly built St Gabriel School just after Christmas of tht year. If I remember correctly, when I went to Noter Dame, the future St-Gabe’s kids went in the PM and the Noter Dame kids went in the AM. My first communion was made in spring 1956 and Christ the King was not a new church at that time.
