Going through some old photos, I came across this one from 2002, looking north along Freedom Way from Park St towards University. It shows the long demolished Top Hat Restaurant and the recently demolished Tunnel Bar-B-Q.
Have a good safe long weekend everyone. See you back here Wednesday next week. No post Monday due to the holiday.
Freedom Way? Whoa there, I’ve been away too long. Sounds American. What was the name of this little street previously, and when and why was it changed?
Was is Military Street?
According to 1924 Vernon’s Directory, I believe it may have previously been named Cartier Place.
Yes it was Military Street.
SGO, perhaps Freedom Way was once referred to as Military Street but as mentioned above, Vernon’s Directory identifies it as Cartier Place. Also the post card at this link ( http://swoda.uwindsor.ca/node/1088 ) refers to the street as Cartier Place. I don’t know when it was renamed to Freedom Way or if it ever was Military Street.
