From the Border Cities Star, October 31, 1931
- With the school’s “father”, Mr. Harry E. Guppy, veteran former school trustee present, the new Guppy Public School, on Tecumseh Road, was formally opened in ceremonies Friday afternoon and evening. The school has been in use since the beginning of the fall term.
Above is how the school looked at its opening.
The photo above was from the original plan that we looked at last week.
Here’s a more recent view.
At least it is still standing.
Sadly looks nothing like it was supposed to.
There was the Great Depression at that time, so the fact it was built at all is remarkable.
Why so many schools?
1. Large families
2. Two, 3 or even 4 families per house.
3. 1920s thinking even in 1930. They didn’t know the depression was going to last for another ten years.
i remember people calling it Guppy out of habit but at the time it was called Commerce. It was our playground in the back with a backstop and strike out against the wall.
what a great structure, we need to get those windows back!
