Regular reader Darren, sends along this photo noting that it appears that Ford Motor Company has sent the building eaters in to start work on the Foundry.
Note in this crop there are two of them, the orange one on the left and you can catch a glimpse of the yellow one on the right. Thanks for the heads up Darren!
Last but not least, a rendering from Johnson McWhinnie, showing the elevation of Cody Hall, which we covered yesterday.
As you can see below there are a few differences between the planned structure and the final result. Most notably the grey columns on the main floor are much thicker and more obrtusive to the sightlines of the building. If it had been built as imagined, I think it would be a much nicer building, with the vistas across the base. Next time I speak with Doug Johnson, I’ll ask him if he rembers why the change occured.
Thanks for the heads up, Darren and Andrew. As a laid off Ford worker who has spent quite a few years in the old foundry, I wish I was there to say goodbye to this amazing and historic structure.
I once took one of my apprenticeship instructors from St. Clair Clollege through while it was in operation, and he was blown away that a business like this still existed in the 21st century. As he was dodging molten iron, he had a look on his face like he was caught off-guard in a RoboCop sequel. Very cool, indeed!
I have so many photos of that place from over the years. Some nice close zoom shots from when they replaced some stacks and things. You can see the new construction portables in the photo too for the demo crew i guess. Those weren’t there before.
3 of those machines were working in that area today making noises like metal being ripped apart. I will shoot video if i see more and put it on youtube for you to use here since the video camera has a 25x optical lens compared to the 4x on my digital camera.
I have a lot of photos from the old Chrysler Pillette Road Truck Assembly Plant too. Which has been torn down. When I started there in 94′ their gate line was one of the oldest around too. Wish I could of got photos of it in action with all the smoke from the welders and sparks.
I’ve been thinking of taking a shot of the foundry each day in the same position, and then making a time lapse video from it to watch the progress.
amazingly, they’ve been still tearing stuff apart today during the snowstorm.
Darren, if only the city worked that fast on implementing their CIP’s and other construction around town…:)
yeah, i guess the demo company has a quote on the job maybe, just a set price but not time, so the sooner they finish the better for them.
