Work continues on the Peace Beacon. Hopefully when it’s done, it will cease to look like a concrete bunker.
When I was at Dieppe Park shooting these photos, I noticed that there are many reapeating elements in the Civic Centre design of Johnson & McWhinnie. The floral compass, as well as some staircases are all made with the same fieldstone that is part of the Cleary Guest House.
Speaking of the old Guest House, I noticed that the “WELCOME” letters have been removed. Another one gets closer to demolition.
i keep wondering why they built it like that. seems like it’s over engineered to me. saw them putting in a skylight today that probably cost a fortune. i guess it will be hard to burn down as it is.
I thought fall out shelters were underground…..
When the city fathers do away with the Guest House, would you be kind enough to post a picture or two?

On the bright side, at least they are getting the least inspiring beacon (in my opinion) done with first so there may be more to look forward to in the future.

i seriously want to vomit every time i pass by this thing. the most valuable piece of property in the city and this is the best they could come up with? a concrete box with a bunch of pillars shoved inside it. so much for being creative.
Why is the city so obsessed with mucking up the riverfront with useless crap like the peace beacon? How about planting some TREES along the river and installing picnic shelters or wading pools. By the way, whatever happened to all the wading pools in Windsor’s parks? When I was a kid I remember Memorial Park had a wading pool AND ice rink but the dumbass city administration closed them down. I guess they were worried about kids having a good time.
Yep, there used to be a wading pool in Jackson Park too, which doubled as a nice skating rink in the winter if conditions were just right. It was closed, fell into disrepair, and was eventually removed altogether. There’s a basketball court there now.
why didn’t we just leave the old Holiday Inn where it was, and back fill it.
The restaurant in this bunker blows. Really sh-itty service. A week ago, I went inside to order the Chicken Breast Sandwich combo. It came with fries and coleslaw. I’m a healthy eatier and told her I can’t have greasy fries with coleslaw with mayonaisse, so I asked if they can substitue for a baked potato with salad and white vinegar. Waitress said, nope, they don’t cook baked potatoes and they won’t substite and it’s the same price with the greasy fries and coleslaw or not. I bought it because I was there with my friend and specifically told her not to give me the greasy fries and coleslaw if they won’t substitute. It was $8.95 before tax and grat. plus drink. She gave me the greasy fries anyway. They don’t have a healthy choice, low fat menu. This place blows and I can’t believe we spent millions to build this damn place and lease it out to a restauranteur that doesn’t know how to cook a baked potato. Next time, I’ll go to McDonald’s for their Chicken McGrill combo without mayo. Screw this damn overpriced bunker and everything related to it.. I never wanted it. There was nothing wrong with the Cleary Guest house. And, now they rub it in with this idiot restauranteur.
David you know what kills me is before this place was built hotdog venders used to set up shop in the park now since it’s been there no other food vendor can sell there food in the park i guess the city wants the whole pie
