A couple of weeks back we took a look at the long gone Windsor Gas Company building on Chatham Street West. In the comments we got discussing how the former Chatham Street Grill/C.H. Streets building was noted as being the Hydro offices. Above is a photo of that building from about 1928.
Hopefully someone moves into the building and it doesn’t sit empty too long. The longer buildings sit empty, the more likely they are to come down.
I walk past this building almost every day and never knew it was the original hydro building i wonder what year they built the office at elliot and Ouellette, yes it would be nice to see it repurposed as Eddie would say
Gary, my records show 1954-1955 as the date on the Ouellette office building.
The office on Ouellette is quite nice. Does anyone remember when they had a fountain outside on the sidewalk?
I sure wish Windsor had more fountains. we are after all, a city that was founded due to our waterways.
The building on Ouellette should also take down that aluminum siding (about 10 feet from teh ground) that covers up some interesting architectural details.
My grandfather worked there. I remember as a kid, walking by the place with my mom and her pointing out the door on the west side where, in the summertime, he would sit on the stoop and eat his lunch. The little ways people connect with buildings.
Dave, don’t we have a fountain in Willistead that flows with cigarette butts and wrappers? It’s quite unique I would say.
They got rid of the fountain in front of the utilites building on Ouellette because the kids kept throwing soap powder into it and there would be a mountain of suds
I hope they start the fountain at the foot of Ouellette ave this year now that all that construction is done, they had a small one at Ouellette and Wyandotte where that clock is ,but the winos kept using it for a bath tub heheheh!!
Dave if they take down the aluminum they might replace it with stucco yuk!!
LOL@ Gary. That is true! So if kids were throwing soap in the fountain then I have to ask…where were the police? Are there not cameras on that building (I thought there was??). Instead, Windsor demo’s the fountain….typical Windsor response.
Who does’t like fountains and the pleasure they bring?
Steve, I think that is the Victoria Jubilee fountain that used to be at the Walkerville Train Station. Yup, another fountain not working in this city because…they are too cheap to spend money on them. But they have lots of money for stupidity (everyone can name many).
There was a question before about when the Kennedy building to the East of this one had the bottom two floors renovated and windows redesigned. I just noticed from comparing this one to the current street view, that the front windows are re-done, just like the Kennedy building. Whenever they were done, I’d bet it was at the same time.
Interesting. Never really noticed this building too much but it still retains some of its original features. Solid building, I think it will find a tenant eventually…hopefully. But then again we can tear it down and make way for another urine soaked parkette or if we play our cards right a Bjork Icelandic memorial peace clock.
I wish they would do something with that hole at Park and Ouellette apparently some one purchased that spot but no word on what will end up there probably a urine soaked parkette like you mentioned Alan
What do you guys mean by a hole in the ground at Ouellette and Park? I am downtown frequently and haven’t seen one O.o
Jesse, I believe gary means where the fire was on Ouellette next to Crazy-horse saloon.
