The picture above is from 1965, when this store on Tecumshed Rd. E, just east of Jefferson was known as Ajax Building Materials.
For some reason someone along the way covered over the front windows….
Oh well, at least they take both Master Charge and Chargex! 😉
I hope every one is having a safe and happy long weekend.
I can’t remember what for, but I think this building was used for manufacturing of some sort between the Ajax and Floor Store years – may explain the covering up of the windows. Can’t let the busy workers see the outside world now, can we? 😉
You didnt’ get a shot of their totem pole?
I remember that fake wall on the left side — or, discovering it was fake, and not part of the store, when I was a kid. And somehow being disappointed since then — my first facade-let-down.
The Floor Store sponsored a stock car that raced at Checker Flag. There was a family that cheered on that car that wore matching satin Floor Store jackets each week (or, at least the weeks we went). We lived down the street and would sneak in.
The windows were probably blocked off to turn them into walls for in-store mechandise. Matthew’s Lumber started out that way and eventually ran out of wall space.
LOL…y’know, for some reason, i always assumed that place used to be a bowling alley in the 60’s or so. was i really that far off?? lol
I remember some type of little animal exhibit behind Ajax anybody else remember that?
Chris L, that animal exhibit sounds vaguely familiar, now that you mention it.
I was bummed out when that building started to look run down. I was glad they spruced it up, but would have preferred a restoration, over this renovation.
They have toned down the colour scheme and gone for stucco colour, without it actually being stucco.
And Shawn, I felt same way about the false wall. That`s funny.
