A long time reader sent me an email the other week about this house at 4219 Wyandotte Street East, on the south side of Wyandotte, just east of Rossini Boulevard.

The house was built around 1877 by early settler Stanislas Janisse. His house was originally located closer to the river on his farm. The land for the farm was sold off around 1916, and the house was moved to its current location to make way for the creation of Rossini Boulevard.

Stanislas was a prominent well known citizen and was active in the church. He passed away in 1937 at the age of 87. Below is his obituary that ran in the Windsor Daily Star on January 5, 1937:

Collapses In Church Pew

Stanislaus Janisse, 87. Fatally Stricken At Mass

Was Well Known

Was Descendant of Pioneer French Family In Essex County

Descendant of one of the pioneer French families that founded the Windsor settlement on the Detroit River waterfront, Stanislaus Janisse, aged 87, collapsed in his pew at Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church while attending early mass this morning and died from a heart attack.

APPEARED “QUITE SPRY”

Mr. Janisse appeared to be “quite spry” and in good health when he arrived at the church this morning for his regular devotions, according to Fr. Chevalier and friends who met him, but shortly after entering church he was stricken.

The body was removed to the Janisse Brothers Funeral Home where arrangements were made for funeral services to be held Thursday at 9 a.m. from the home and from the church at 9.30. Burial will be in Lady of the Lake Cemetery in Ward 1. A past president of the St. Jean Baptiste Society of Western Ontario, Mr. Janisse was closely linked with the development of many parts of the district. He was born on the old Janisse homestead, which is now the site of Rossini boulevard. He made his home at 209 Ottawa street. Ward 1. one of the lots on the ancestral farm.

His father was late Charles Janisse, revered old-timer, and his mother, the late Clotilde Marantette, whose family the well-known Windsor thoroughfare was named.

WAS FORMERLY TEACHER

In his youth, Mr. Janisse taught school. but he spent most of his life as a farmer, and as the community grew he became interested in property development. A son-in-law. U. G. Reaume, took a major part in the development of Riverside. Mr. Janisse celebrated his 87th birthday on December 18 last. Each border citizens have joined in felicitating him.

He has been in fairly good health in spite of advancing years, although one year ago he SuStained a fall during mass and had to be carried from the church. His wife died 15 years ago. but he leaves children that have contributed to advancement of community and business activity on both sides of the boundary. Two sons are Denis R., professor of French in the University of Detroit, and Armand, one of the owners of the Ajax Tool and Supply Company, of Detroit. His two daughters are Miss Claire Janisse, at home, and Mrs. U. G. Reaume of Riverside, He also leaves a step-son, Jules Parent, of Windsor, and a step-daughter. Mrs. James McRae of Detroit.

Mr. Janisse leaves a brother, Adolph, of Riverside, and two sisters. Miss Charlotte, and Miss Louise, both of 284 Ottawa street, Ward 1.
