New Post Office – 1934

Happy Friday again! Today, we take a look at this photo dated June 26, 1934.

The caption reads:

    “New Federal Post Office”

The new Dominion Public Building at 185 Ouellette was designed by a team of local architects: Guy Buller Colthurst, Hugh Sheppard, George Masson and John Trace came up with the plans in 1932. The photo above ran in honour of the dedication of the new building which occurred on June 27, 1934.

The Hon. Robert J. Manion, minister of Railways and Canals, along with Col. Sidney C.Robinson, M.P. for Essex West were the ones to dedicate the building.

Have a good weekend everyone, see you back here Monday…

  • While I really like the Post office building downtown it really took out some interesting buildings when it was built. Like the Weights and measures building used to be on Chatham St where the alley is next to the old Grinnel manufacturing building.

The other thing I have never been happy about is the removal of the Boer war memorial to Jackson Park's Sunken Gardens. Where it has languished and been heavily vandalized. At least the city put some money into a few years back but it should have remained a fountain and at the very least stayed downtown somewhere. Which brings me to why doesn't Windsor have more fountains? We should have dozens throughout downtown giving us residents a wonderful delight.

  • dave i think we don't have more fountains downtown because do you remember the one that was in front of endwins office at elliot and ouellette kids kept throwing laundry soap in it and there would be soap suds all over the place but yes i agree 100% with you there should be more fountains

  • Dave have you ever noticed that in the summer months when the city puts flowers and nice green plants on ouellette ave they always seem to skip the block between wyandotte and elliot st i've made inquiries but got stonewalled

  • And now the Federal Government doesn't want this building any more. Eddie doesn't want it as City Hall...what will happen to it?
