Great turnout at this event last night – an amazing archive of images was shown by about 6 presenters. The Detroit riverfront ferries and barges, and rail lines along the Canadian and American sides were most memorable. Thanks to Tim, Bob and staff of Action Hobbies for a grand event. Looking forward to the next one!!
I was there as well, lots more people than I expected. I was also the youngest and had the only woman with me lol.
Of course the wife wanted to go early so we only got to see 3 of the presenters…..which means I missed all the riverfront shots I went there for 🙁
Thanks to everyone who came and thanks to Andrew for helping promote this on this site. For our first show with only little over a week’s notice and minimal advertising, the turnout was impressive. We’re already looking at organizing the next one which will hopefully (depending on a few factors falling into place within the next month to make it happen) focus on Kingsville (and surrounding communities) and the history of the service and operations in the area from 1893-1990’s. We hope to promote this show in advance and perhaps bring in more casually interested folks (including a bigger gender mix!). Future shows will alternate by having focused themes (such as local communities) and shows like this first one (a mix bag of surprises from a wide variety of presenters).
Aaron – there were a group of guys at the back aged 21 and younger. They had to leave early after the first three presenters because they all had work or school early in the morning.
Hope to see everyone out again at the next show. Look for details to be confirmed within the next month.
Oh – and for me personally, there were many interesting highlights. The Leamington train wreck photos were pretty amazing – shot while the black smoke was still billowing, that would never get seen today. Also the great irony that not one but two huge freight cars literally missed sliding into and destroying the Leamington station by literally centimeters was both astonishing and sadly ironic – the great station survived that, but not the wrecker’s ball due to Leamington’s council (and community) neglect to save it decades later while they had the chance. The Detroit River ferry photos were terrific, plus having the 30 years of service Captain of the ferry himself on hand to aide with details of the operations and the associated history was pretty interesting as well. Geoff Elliott’s mix of photos were just great examples of landscape photography by anyone’s definiton – the trains in the photos were just interesting additions to some beautiful shots (also – the sinking boat house!). Kulbacki and Phillips’ humor of tales on the road to get the shots of stations and relics from a different era were great, as were shots of seeing just how bad the Kingsville Station had become before an effort was made to restore and preserve it to the fantastic shape it now is in. And the Detroit guest who talked like WC Fields was a pretty funny presenter as well. 😀
Sounds like I missed all the best stuff….awww
