Geo. E. White & Son

Here’s a little building I drive past all the time, located at the corner of Sheppard and Windsor. The former home of Geo. E. White & Son Ltd.

Here’s a view of the building, it’s located directly across the street from Windsor Truck and Storage (Windsor’s oldest business, having started in 1880).

The company was founded in 1880 as well, and was home to a builder’s supply company. I believe it closed in the early 1990’s around 1990 or 1991. I like the little “W” in the parapet, a personalized touch you don’t see often in new construction…

Above is a photo of the company from 1913:

“For every modern construction – factories, residences, stores, tanks, etc., George E. White & Son furnish highest quality of building supplies. Cement, sand, gravel, lime, plaster, sewer pipe and face and common brick, together with a complete line of general building supplies comprise the business of this firm, whose history dates back for thirty-three years. The company has a capital stock of one hundred thousand dollars an employs fourteen capable and experienced men. H.A. White is the manager, through whose progressive methods the “White Way” has become popular with many contractors and builders.”

  • Wait a minute wait a minute.........is that black and white of the same spot?!?!?!?

I've been waiting for this little place to pop up on the site! It's also one of very few places where you can find a painted sign on the wall in this city.

    Thanks Andrew!

  • Aaron - I don't think it's the same spot. Too many buildings in the 1913 shot. The area where it is today wasn't that built up in 1913.

  • It is now called Geo.T White (George being name passed down). They are still in business and sell some automated parts.

  • I used to do business with George white buying concrete supplies for my fence business .i remember mr White he was a very nice business man after he was to old to come to work his daughter would run the business they closed shortly after the home depot came to windsor.
    great posts..

  • I'm George White IV, the original George E White and son was located on Pitt street. It was founded by my Great Grandfather, and eventually it was managed by my Grandfathers brother and than was purchased by my father George Edward III I worked many summers through high school and university, and through my early 20s. I miss it very much as I miss my mom and dad.

    George E White IV

Ps...it has nothing to do with George T White that was another business.

  • The location of the building in 1913 as pictured above, could have been the original that was on Pitt St. judging by what his great grandson tells us. I love it when family of businesses in Windsor come on here and fill in the gaps and tell us first hand some of the stories of their families...thank you George E. White IV !!
