New Airport Terminal – 1958

So the server is moved, and all seems to be in order… If you notice anything funky, please let me know by email…

Now, on to today’s photos.

From the Detroit News, these shots dated June 13, 1958, and the dedication of the new Windsor Airport Terminal Building.

The terminal was designed by Government architects, and built by the Eastern Construction Company.

Obviously a big party was held, and all kinds of important people turned out for the occasion. This photo was taken on the Airside of the terminal. Note the 1950’s design elements, such as the big chrome “W I N D S O R” letters, and note the observation deck, where one could stand outside and watch the comings and goings of the aircraft.

What was at one time a pretty nifty little terminal, has suffered through the years, and been subject to some unsympathetic renovations over the years. Note the metal siding on the control tower…

I know the interior was spruced up, but not a lot has changed with the outside of the terminal building.

Now if only we could get more flights to more places… 😉

As a side note, the airport is currently conducting a survey to see who goes where, and from where. So if you’re a traveler, you might be interested in filling out this survey here. There was little blurb about it in the local daily newspaper the other day…

Have a good weekend everyone, see you back here Monday.

  • Hey - that survey says "We're sorry. You have already taken this survey", but I didn't. Anyone else have that problem?

    Damn survey.

  • Yeh I got the same "sorry you have already taken this survey" I know that I never took it !!!

  • Fifty years ago the airport terminal actually looked like something. Now it looks like Canadian Tire DIY meets Lego meets a large appliance abandoned at the sidewalk on recycling day.

  • As a youngster, I visited the observation deck many times during the sixties and seventies. Trans-Canada Air Lines Vickers Viscounts; and later the Viscounts, Vanguards, DC-9-32s and occasional DC-8s (on charters) of Air Canada were the usual visitors. More exotic machines included Canadian Pacific Air Lines' Bristol Britannias and DC-8s on the Windsor-Mexico City sked run. International charter visitors included Britannias and 707s of Caledonian, 707s of Laker Airways and even an Ilyushin IL-62 of Aeroflot. Remember the massive 747s of Wardair Canada dwarfing the terminal? Great spotting for a budding aviation enthusiast. It is a shame that Dash 8s are the mainstay today.

  • It's too bad the terminal doesn't look better than it did originally. I really like that style of lettering for any building, it looks substantial and modern to me anyway. Plus it is probably durable as well.

I still chuckle that the airport is on a 2 lane road though, when will it be widened?? Windsor airport has so much undeveloped space, which is rare for airports these days. I recall Ford selling their Atlanta plant to make room for airport expansion down there.

  • i remember when they did all these improvements to the air port i heard they were putting a lounge in and i thought great maybe a small restaurant /bar so you can sit and wait for someone coming in on a flight well it turns out the lounge is for outbound passengers nothing but uncomfortable rows of bench seats what a let down
