Downtown Windsor – 1930

Up today is a photo looking north from the Norton Palmer Hotel taken in 1930. Despite all the things I cover here on the website that have been mangled, or demolished, it’s funny how this one vantage point would still look remarkably similar even today. 🙂 .

It’s also a good shot of how the ground floor of the Guaranty Trust Building on the left looked before it was “renovated”.

  • Ys, other than the shrinking of our downtown it is remarkably similar to today. Not all is lost :)

  • Cool Picture Andrew !! Thank you !! Ps.... I wish Windsor still looked like this picture ! It breaks my heart !

  • look at that house tucked in between the buildings! And..do I spot a church nextdoor to the house? that's not the building that sushi place is in is it? Whatever happened to having flag poles on your building? I've been looking at the Loop the past little while thinking how much nicer it would look with flags in all those flagpole bases around the building.

also...what's up with the ship in the river? did he have the apperature open for 3 minutes or was it moving at mach 1 LOL!

    great shot!

    Thanks Andrew!

  • i don't think so Tim.....
i went looking for a picture that would show me the area, and i found one that's probly from the late 20's early 30's (i don't know for sure, but the Fisher Building in detroit is complete and there are still ferries and excursion steamers on the water)and it doesn't appear that phog existed. with the stepped roof it has i assumed it was older. in this photo it shows the Capitol, then the alley, an empty lot stretching a little further south than where the old Alcapocco Delight used to stand before all it's bricks fell off, a one storey building - but too far from the alley to be phog, then a larger 3-4 storey building on the corner of Victoria.
That was a good question...i had always thought that building was at least from the 20's.

  • well, i suppose my picture is at least in the mid to late 30's since i'm not observent enough of the title of this post....and there's a building in the empty lot i spoke of lol.

  • In the foreground you can see the stage sprinkler water tower that was on top of the Capitol Theatre stage roof. The chimney beside was for the old coal fired burners. Both have since been removed.

  • I remember the Norton Palmer very well. My dad and my uncle used to attend the Border Cities Burns Club there in the 60's. Didn't the building next door house the CBC's old Radio Station CBE before they took over Channel 9?

  • I can tell you that CKLW used to broadcast from either the third or fourth floor of the Guaranty Trust Building. In the early fifties I was a member of the St Marys boy choir. Every Saturday we used to sing over the radio in a programme called The Birthday Party. Antone remember that?
