It looks like the photo was taken a few years later. Too bad the grounds of our post secondary education facilities don’t look like that anymore.
Yes- judging by the cars in the parking lot (if you look closely), it looks like it was taken in the early to mid 70’s.
I always thought I was inside of The Future when at St. Clair. Spaceship building.
I’m guessing there is some interesting back-story on the creation of the college system in Ontario–a lot of bricks and mortar from that same period–I grew up in Hamilton and Mohawk College’s main campus was/is somewhat similar to St. Clair’s–similar vintage, similar brick/brutalist design.
I’m glad that they’re expanding the campus. I sure hope St.Clair can snag some early 20th century buildings downtown because they’re slacking on anything before the 50’s. Meanwhile the U has tons of historical buildings like Dillon Hall as well as the Armouries downtown and possibly even Paul Martin. Glad that the schools around here seem do be doing well even if landscaping is taking a backseat unfortunately.
Jim, I guess you haven’t been keeping up with the news. St. Clair President, John Strasser and the city just had a falling out over one of the downtown buildings. The college alleges that the University is getting preferential treatment over the college, so it’s not likely St. Clair will be doing too much downtown for some time.
I remember seeing Bachman-Turner Overdrive in the “Ampitheater” out front. It was free but you had to bring empty chocolate bar wrappers (Oh Henry?) to get in. 1973-74.
Barry, there was an amphitheater out front? Where at? I saw Finger Eleven, in 2001 at Griff’s. It was the big Frosh Week concert. Finger Eleven wasn’t that big yet, but I had the CD. Good show. It was free with your student ID.
@Uzzy: Many many man many many years ago I took a wicker weaving course at that fine college. From my long ago recollections there was a tall tall hill next to one of the entrance road ways. From those recollections it was at the north maybe it was? Perchance that is what our friend Barry C is referring to?
Uzzy,
The “Amphitheater” would have been where the northwest parking lot is today. It was more of a large grassy mound, no seating, just sat on the ground. Like Ron said it was just a tall hill. But, it was advertised on CKLW as the St. Clair Amphitheater.
Cheers…
