The Deluxe Apartments

Seriously. That’s the name they show up under on the 1937 Fire Insurance Map. Two stores on the ground floor with apartments above.

I suspect quite a while back, these apartments ceased to be “deluxe”. Located on the corner of Monmouth & Ontario, I recently noticed the other day, that the building is now boarded up, and all but one gas meter has been removed.

It’s received the same treatment as the Howard Block (covered back in December). Anyone know anything about this place?

The first few blocks of Ontario Street has always seemed strange to me. You have buildings like this one, yet you head west a few blocks, and you hit homes like the Low-Martin house featured yesterday.

  • I wonder if it's named after the builder? Maybe one of the first occupants was named De Luxe?

Might be a very very very very long shot, but it may even have been a dealership trying to sell the high priced $5,000 De Luxe in 1908 made by the De Luxe Motor Car Company of Detroit, which later was owned by Studebaker.

  • When I went to school at St.Annes there back in the 80's that corner area was a corner store. It had a long counter to the one side with stools in front of it and in the back was a game room.

  • hmm... just need to remove the bright orange brick sections and open that front to a beautiful neighborhood cafe. I sure hope places like this are not slated for the wrecking ball. Much more valuable of a building when it has this kind of brickwork, but the siding "barn" to the left doesnt do much for the area. Some trees by the sidewalk would be nice too.

  • This building was home to a very long standing hair shop with real vintage flair. Since then it has been nothing more than a very iffy rental unit. The Police are more than familiar with it. There has not been any luck for this building probably as a result of ownership which has shown no pride, care or respect for the structure or the surrounding community . Evidence of this is the mismatch in bricks which were only installed in the late 1990's. One major problem with the re-use of the building is that it is slab on grade meaning no basement. If I had the money...

  • Great old fashioned soda fountain, hamburger joint, variety store back in the sixties. Pit stop on the way to/from Walkerville Collegiate for the teen set. Vanished civilization......might as well tear it down now.

  • I know there is a photo floating around, maybe it was published by the Walkerville Times??, which shows this building in its hey day - lower storey is recessed retail with great overhanging canvas awnings and large plate glass - soda shop and grocer type uses..apartments above..
