The other day, I was cruising around the Ford casting plant that is due to close, looking for a good spot to get a photo of it. Across the street was this mysterious little place.
There was a closed sign on the door, yet no listing on-line or in the Phone Book for this place. I have no idea if it is operational or if it is the Windsor equivalent of a Schvitz?
What is a Schvitz you ask? It is a Jewish Steam Bath. This is located two blocks east and a half block south of where the East Windsor Synagogue was located.
If you want some information on the Detroit Schvitz, there is a good link here and here.
Gotta love the hi-tech moisture removal system: Sawzall to cut sloppy hole in front wall, mount fan. Done.
This is privatly owned and still in use.
Alice the building is still there but I’m almost positive the baths are not being used as I know the person who owns it and I also know the lady the rents the house next to her which is also owned by the steam bath. She might open it for a group but it is to expensive to keep the steam going for as few people as would use it today !
