A neat view along Ouellette from the late 1950’s. Looks like it was quite the hoppin’ place.
A neat view here along the edge of the postcard, show a woman getting on the bus. The low rise block with the “Jeweller” sign, was the one that was torched earlier in the year.
Here’s the block today.
How wonderful to see one of those old SW&A buses … I had forgotten what they looked like.
Keep up the good work on the site; I left Windsor in 1972 and haven’t been back since the mid-80s, but I really enjoy the site, especially street scenes like these.
Canada”s biggest city south of the U.S…..were the only city south of the U.S. Interesting marketing scheme for the day. 🙂
crazy that the wilkinson ad is still there.
So much has changed and for the worse. When people tell me that downtown will never be a large retail place I always asked why not? Who says it can’t? Other cities have malls and thriving downtowns why can’t Windsor?
I would like to know city halls plan to make downtown a thriving place (it should not just be on the BIA’s dime and time) and what they are doing to attract retail?
for all the money Windsor has in taxes (yes we are still one of the highest taxed municipalities in Ontario) where in the heck is it ending up? I applaude the reign in on spending but not everything needs to have a return on investment. We need to prioritize the needs of the city and weigh them against where the money is going now (cough, cough, WPD and WFD…way too much money is spent at both compared to other cities).
Seems to have been a number of jewellers in this stretch…and a the requisite souvenir shop. Interesting to see the metered street parking on the east side of Ouellette.
There’s at least one old bus similar to the one shown in this photo that Transit Windsor still presses into service when needed. It has the original dark green and butter yellow colors. It’s delightful to see it still running about town…it’s at least 30 years old.
that secound photo with the bus the souviner shop was owned by a friend of mine,he’as told me tha about it for years and the photo is the first time i’ve actually seen it i vagely remember that big sign it’s too bad that it’s still not there,i wonder if that jewllers sign is the same one thats around the corner on park st i think those people moved off ouellette and took their sign it kind of seems like it might be
Aaron that small sign thats mounted on the wall near the roof of the building i think it said Seeburg financial and it’s offices were where that after hours club is today above the post office
Huh? Did I ask about it….or are you asking me? lol 🙂
I remember that place being called “Room 213” Its where all us misfits would hang out and drink coffee and Jones soda drinks…..I don’t know if I’d call them pop.
I get so mad whenever I see pics of that building without its stucco! 🙁
@pcnyc … that’s a 50s Twin Coach in the photo. The bus you are thinking of is mid ’70s GM newlook, #912.
BTW there is a very similar (could even be the same) former SW&A twin coach out on a private property on Highway 19 near 46. It’s nestled back far from the road but fairly visible. It’s owned by a private collector. From the outside it looks fair but inside it’s in very rough shape.
i was asking you Aaron
i figured you probably had a little info on it don’t sweatit 🙂
The photo would have to be from the mid 60’s because of a couple of cars from the early sixties on Ouellette, and from one on Park street that looks like a mid sixties Ford. The van out side of Birk’s Jewellers may date it even later, but the resolution isn’t high enough to make a positive ID.
in the first and 2nd photos it looks like there are strings of lights across ouellette ave 50-60’s style emergency lighting lol
i look at the two photos of ouellette especially the first one and i think it would be nice if ouellette was still as spacious now as it was back then
Dave i think aBIG!! part of the money is going to all these pointless feasability studies and consultants fees
i wonder how long that empty lot at park and ouellette is going to stay like that it would be nice if the city would turn it into a little parkette or something
Turn it into a parkette and it will be a perfect toilet for all those drunk Americans leaving the bars at 2:00am. Maybe city council should promote a contest for the peoples ideas of what can be done with the Downtown. Probably the majority will be off the wall but there will probably be some real jems ! Then again our city council hates it when someone other then them or their well paid consultant friends comes up with a fantastic idea that they can’t take credit for !!! All that DOWNTOWN CANAL property bought up and it made rich people richer at the cost of the tax payers…
What property did the city buy for yhe canel? They talked about it buy I do not recall any thing being bought, refresh my memory.
that canal has to be the stupidest idea any council or mayor has come up with to date
The city didn’t buy any property for a canal. Some of you people need to investigate your own delusions and/or rumours before spouting off on topics you heard from someone, who heard from someone, who heard from someone else, who heard….
I find it hard to believe that no one has mentioned MacPherson’s Nut House!
