It Was Twenty Years Ago Today…

Sorry but today, I’m drifting off topic… A special anniversary is taking place today.

On November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall fell.

Today there are only a few traces of the once 96 mile long wall remaining in Berlin. The section above is a restored and recreated section. As you can see there were several parts to the wall. The taller section in the foreground faced West Berlin, while a no-man’s land with a patrol road was in the middle, with a smaller wall on the East Berlin side.

To this day, there are still parts of the city, where a swath of vacant land fills what was once a dead zone between East & West.

This cemetery was located in East Berlin, the back side of the Berlin Wall ran through the cemetery.

The few original sections still standing are in rough shape, with most of the vandalism having taken place 15-20 years ago.

It’s hard to imagine today, that the Berlin Wall only stood for 28 years, and it’s now been gone almost as long as it was standing. One of the most shocking things about the clip above is how young Peter Mansbridge was…

As someone who grew up in the cold war era, it was quite an experience to have had the chance to travel to Berlin and see the wall first hand.

  • I was there and proud to say one of the original vandals. If anyone wants to se a chunk of the wall I have one.

  • We can all be glad to say that we were alive when that demolition happened : ) Truly a great day for freedom. Berlin has rebounded so much since those days.. now it is a very progressive and interesting place, one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse cities on earth, much as it was before the era of Hitler and then Communism...
