February kicks of Black Heritage month across Canada and the United States, and today I thought we would take a look at one of the oldest church parishes in the City of Windsor.
This postcard view from about 1918 shows the First Baptist Church incorrectly labeled as being on Windsor Avenue.
The church is located at 710 Mercer Ave. in downtown Windsor. It was built in 1915, to replace an earlier church that burnt down.
The cornerstone to the original church was built into the replacement building. The parish was founded in 1854, and is as old as the city of Windsor. The original church dated to 1858.
The church is a great looking classic church, and is in fantastic shape.

That looks like the church at the corner of Tuscarora & Mercer. My grand-parents lived in the 300 block of Tuscarora most of their lives. I remember my grand-mother used to talk about the pretty bad car accident that happened at that corner. Unfortunately a young child perished in the accident, the vehicle came to rest on the front lawn just short of the sign.

the house that is right behind the church in the top photo and seconed photo look the same it must be an old house also.
I am guessing that someone like Shelley Harding-Smith might know something about the history or could put you in touch with someone in the know.
As I live on the east side ,Pillette & Seminole area I for one am not going to miss the stink from this foundry. Being able to go out on muggy days and not smelling Fords EMISSIONS is great !!!!
