Then and Now – Drouillard Road

Above is a shot looking north on Drouillard from Wyandotte St., during the Ford Blockade of 1945. Sadly everything north of the Windsor Co-operative Bakery has been demolished.

The stairs are now fenced in and filled in with concrete. The entire Drouillard Road Subway is due to be refurbished and repaired in 2007.

Even the Windsor Co-operative Bakery still stands. The entire building is now all residential, but it’s still there. If buildings could talk, I bet that one could tell some stories…

  • andrew i read a earier post of yours and you said you worked at the old welles bus factory on marentte could you possibly give a little info on it and if the building is still in use?

  • Sorry to interject. The old Welles bus factory is not really in use (it may still be used somewhat as a warehouse) for any manufacturing of any kind. It was used to house just in time delivery parts for Plant 3 and the "big van" plant. An addition was added in 1998 and the inside was refurbished somewhat.
The last I heard it was up for sale (it is or was owned by Manny Maroun of Ambassador Bridge fame).

  • Yup Paul is right... It was recently rehabilitated and has reopened as TDS Automotive Plant 4. It is used as warehousing, and I believe some sequencing as well. I'm just glad the building is being used again, it's looked pretty sorry over the last few years.

  • i have another question do you know andrew if there was a building across the street from drouillard place on st luke st

  • Tecumseh Mall before it was a mall was likely a field...

Devonshire Mall before the mall was a Horse Racing Track.

  • Stairs! I have wondered forever what those slopes were for.

The guy who ordered them to be filled in....so...windsor.

  • After the Devonshire Race Track closed down, it was a farmer's field. All that was left was a house and a pond with willow trees roughly where the Keg is today.

  • unfortuntly the old welles bus factory has become vacant again since tds moved thier operations to sprucewood
